The Rise of the App Store
App stores are appearing in many markets now. In the old days we had software, and then we had shareware, and that was about it. With the rise of smartphones, and their small, dedicated software applications, the term ‘app’ became much more popular.
The largest app store is the Apple store, which has apps for the iPhone. But there are many other smartphones and most of them now have their own app stores.
In addition, the tablet makes are setting up app stores for their tables, including the Apple iPad. There are many tablets comign to market including from HP, Dell, and others.
Many apps are free, and most are specifically dedicated to just one task. This means that app stores tend to have a huge number of apps, and it takes time to find the app that is just right for you.
It is also easy to launch your own apps, and 1,000’s of people have done so. The company that owns the app store is distributing your app for you, so distribution is easy. And for the few that have an app that goes viral, potentially very lucrative!
